We In Front walking group

In the rolling hills around Huddersfield, a remarkable group of walkers is proving that it’s never too late to embrace the outdoors—or to change your life.

The Origins of We In Front…

We In Front, a walking group founded in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, now boasts over 30 regular members, most of whom discovered the joy of countryside walking later in life. At its heart is Errol Hamlet, a charismatic Huddersfield local originally from Carriacou in the Grenadines, whose personal journey with walking became the spark that lit a movement.

During lockdown, Errol began walking with a neighbour to relieve the pressures of isolation. At the time, he was also living with health challenges, including prostate cancer and joint replacements, and carrying the grief of losing his wife. But walking soon lifted his spirits, restored his energy, and connected him with the countryside in a way he had never experienced before.

Friends soon joined him, and what started as a small group walking off lockdown fatigue quickly grew into something more powerful. For many, it wasn’t just exercise—it was a lifeline. With each walk, members found companionship, resilience, and a sense of joy that carried well beyond the footpaths.

Today, We In Front is a vibrant walking community rooted in Huddersfield’s West Indian community but welcoming to all. The name itself reflects their spirit: moving forward, staying active, and celebrating life together. Rain or shine, boots laced and waterproofs zipped, the group sets off with determination and laughter, proving that age or circumstance needn’t be a barrier to adventure.

While Errol is the figure at the heart of its beginnings, it is people like Cynthia Matheson, the group’s secretary and an early member, who help keep the group thriving. Cynthia has seen We In Front grow from its first tentative steps into a close-knit community that continues to inspire others to get outdoors.

Their walks are as much about connection as they are about distance covered. They are spaces for storytelling, shared history, and mutual encouragement—a chance to live well, together.

An Interview with Cynthia Matheson

We spoke with Cynthia Matheson, secretary of We In Front, about her experiences in the group and the powerful impact it has had on her and others.

What was it like in those early days of the group—did you imagine it would grow into what it is today?

Errol Hamlet began his journey taking regular walks round his neighbourhood with Mrs. Williams. When the walk stopped due to unforeseen circumstances. Errol was approached one by one by his friends Rocky, Winston, Bertrand, and Mack. At first, they began walking on the streets, after a while Bertrand decided that it was too noisy, so they took a different route. By taking the public footpath, and bridleway, they used a compass and took turns in leading the walk. These men have also testified that walking has helped them maintain their health and wellbeing. Winston has said, “When we first started, my blood pressure reduced and my fitness level improved. By walking I dropped 2 sizes and lost weight mostly around the waistline”

I’m absolutely thrilled to see our walking group flourish, now boasting 33 members strong! It’s truly heartwarming to witness the groups growth and impact, as we have been fortunate enough to touch lives in an inspirational way. The camaraderie, shared experiences, and scenery have combined to create a supportive community that extends far beyond just a walk – it’s a space where friendships are forged and lives are enriched.

How has being part of We In Front changed your life personally?

Joining the walking group has been a game-changer for me enriching my life in ways I never though possible. The regular walks have greatly improved my physical health an overall well-being while the social aspect has introduced me to a wonderful new friend who share my passion for nature. Exploring the beautiful countryside with like minded people has been a true delight allowing me to connect with the natural world and clear my mind. The groups camaraderie and support have made a significant difference in my life, and I feel grateful to be part of it.

Why do you think walking has had such a strong impact on the group’s health and wellbeing?

Instead of a written answer, Cynthia pointed us towards the many powerful stories shared by members of We In Front. You can read their words in the testimonial carousel below, where they describe in their own voices how walking has transformed their health, fitness, and wellbeing.

What are some of your favourite walks or moments from your time with We In Front?

Some of my favourite walks are around the lakes of Dovestone, Holm bridge, Digley and Brownhills, Meltham woods, Skelmanthorpe, Howarth, Denshaw, Saddleworth, Marsden, Sutton Bank North Yorkshire are but a few. When exploring these walks seeing the vibrant greens of summer hearing the gentle rustle of leaves hearing the birds sing. Turning a corner, seeing the calm surface of the reservoirs.  tones of browns in the autumn rich and varied pleasing on the eye. The soft blues of the sky all blend to make heartwarming sceneries.

When strolling past historic buildings, their weathered stones telling stories of the past, what we don’t know we imagine what might have been. And suddenly around a bend, a majestic waterfall cascades into view, leaving me awestruck. Sharing jokes and laughter with members my sprit is lifted and remains throughout the day. Climbing stiles we exclaim “oh god no” in mock despair, our struggles forgotten in the joy of the moment. These walks for me are truly delightful a celebration of nature beauty, and the greatest pleasure for me is sharing this adventure with WIF group members.

What advice would you give to someone who might be nervous about joining a group or getting started with walking?

When joining our walking group for the first time, I’d advise you to wear comfy walking shoes and dress in layers for the unpredictable weather. Don’t forget to bring water, snacks, and sun protection! Be prepared to chat with fellow walkers, share a laugh or two, and introduce yourself. Take it easy on your first walk, pace yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask questions or take breaks when needed. Most importantly, enjoy the beautiful scenery, soak up the camaraderie, and have fun! If you have any health concerns, let the leader know beforehand so they can accommodate your needs.
