Man pumping bike tyre

If you’ve got an old bike gathering dust or are thinking of buying a second-hand one, a little care and attention can go a long way. Here’s a guide to basic bike maintenance to help you get your bike road-ready, along with advice on where to go if you need a bit of extra help.

A Basic How To:

1. Give Your Bike a Thorough Clean

Before starting any repairs, give your bike a good clean. Use warm, soapy water and a sponge to wipe down the frame, wheels, and components. Degrease the chain and gears to remove any built-up grime, then apply chain lubricant to keep everything running smoothly.

2. Perform an M-Check

The M-check is a quick and easy way to ensure your bike is safe to ride. It involves inspecting the key parts of the bike in a pattern that resembles the shape of the letter “M”:

• Wheels and Tyres: Check for damage, ensure tyres are inflated, and that wheels spin freely.

• Brakes: Test both front and rear brakes to ensure they’re working correctly and not rubbing against the rims.

• Chain and Gears: Look for rust or stiffness in the chain and ensure the gears shift smoothly.

• Handlebars and Saddle: Ensure they are secure and properly aligned.

• Pedals and Cranks: Check they’re tight and free from creaking or wobbling.

3. How to Fix a Puncture

Dealing with a flat tyre is one of the most common bike repairs, and it’s straightforward to fix:

1. Remove the wheel and take out the inner tube carefully.

2. Inflate the tube and listen for air escaping or submerge it in water to find the puncture.

3. Dry the tube, then use a puncture repair kit to patch the hole.

4. Refit the tyre and inner tube, ensuring it’s seated evenly before inflating.

4. Brakes and Gears

Brakes and gears are essential for safe and smooth cycling. If your brakes are squeaky or your gears aren’t shifting properly, adjustments may be needed. However, if you’re not confident doing this yourself, it’s best to seek professional help.
