This spring, EPIKS teamed up with the brilliant team at Experience Community to run a four-week wheelchair skills course in Holmfirth – and it was a hit! Led by expert instructors with lived experience, the course gave wheelchair users the chance to boost their skills, confidence, and independence in a supportive and fun environment.

What Happened?
Over four action-packed sessions, participants learned how to push more efficiently, handle tight spaces and tricky doors, and take on slopes, steps and uneven ground like pros. The course ended with a fantastic follow-up event at Sands Playground in Thongsbridge, where everyone got to try exciting off-road equipment like Mountain Trikes, Tri-rides and Klaxon power add-ons – with expert support, of course!

People came from all over – Holmfirth, Hade Edge, Denby Dale, Halifax – and the feedback was amazing. Nathan said he made new friends, got great advice about mobility equipment, and feels much more confident. Heather loved the challenge and is already looking forward to doing more – including volunteering!
Gina from EPIKS summed it up: “It’s very common for wheelchair users to feel isolated, especially in rural areas. This course helped people connect, build confidence and try new things – and now they want more!”
