Walk Wheel Ride 2025: A Year of Activity, Partnership and Impact

In 2025, Walk Wheel Ride delivered an ambitious and wide-reaching programme across Huddersfield, Batley & Spen Valley and the Holme Valley, putting walking, wheeling and cycling at the centre of community life.

Across the three hubs, we held 103 events and recorded attendance exceeded 2,300 people. Many more stopped at our stalls, joined conversations, picked up information or took part informally. The scale of engagement shows that active travel is not a niche issue. It is something people want to talk about, understand and experience for themselves.

A jam-packed year of activities!

Working alongside a wide range of local partners, the three hubs delivered an impressive variety of events and activities designed to meet people where they were and give them practical opportunities to get involved.

These included:

• Dr Bike sessions providing free bike checks and minor repairs

• Bike maintenance workshops building confidence and practical skills

• E-bike and E-cargo bike trial rides allowing people to experience electric assist first hand

• Children’s bike skills sessions supporting the next generation of riders

• Wheelchair skills courses focused on confidence, independence and accessibility

• Guided nature walks highlighting green spaces close to Huddersfield town centre

• Two Go Active family activity days encouraging movement in a fun, inclusive way

• Multi modal days out combining walking and train travel

• Pop up advice events in busy town centre locations

• Attendance at local fairs and community events to widen reach

The emphasis throughout the year was on practical engagement. Rather than simply talking about behaviour change, the programme gave people the chance to try something new, build skills and ask questions in a supportive setting.

Hub updates

The Holme Valley Active Travel Community Hub has now closed. Its work is captured on a dedicated legacy page on the Walk Wheel Ride website, outlining what was delivered locally, key achievements and further resources so that learning about active travel can continue. From spring 2026, you will be able to pick up printed versions of the Walk by Bus maps at the library and other key locations in and around Holmfirth.

In Batley & Spen Valley, activities will pick up again across summer 2026, maintaining visibility and offering more opportunities for residents to get involved. We are currently advertising for this role, see here for more information

In Huddersfield we have secured funding for another year of delivery. The hub will again be partnering with a range of organisations to expand its programme and bring even more community events to the town. Building on strong attendance and detailed feedback from 2025, the next phase will focus on deepening partnerships and increasing opportunities for residents to walk, wheel and ride as part of everyday life.

2025 was a great year!

Reaching over 2,300 recorded attendees, delivering a packed calendar of practical events and building meaningful partnerships across three hubs represents a significant achievement for 2025.

Walk Wheel Ride has not only raised awareness, it has created experiences. From children gaining confidence on two wheels to adults trying an e bike for the first time, from guided walks revealing local green spaces to wheelchair users developing new skills, the programme has helped make active travel visible, accessible and achievable.

As activity continues in Batley & Spen Valley and expands in Huddersfield, 2025 stands as a year that built real momentum and laid firm foundations for what can come next.

Thank you

We would like to thank everyone who attended our events in 2025, our partners for their incredible work and to our funders who made 2025 possible.
